Visit Arles and the Camargue

Just outside the Camargue, Arles and its surrounding area are an excellent choice for a camping trip in the Bouches-du-Rhône, offering the chance to explore the Salins de Giraud salt marshes, the flamingos, the cattle herds and their bulls, and all the waterfowl that inhabit these vast expanses where water blends seamlessly with the land. Winding your way through beaches and reeds on a horseback ride, grab your binoculars to spot egrets, white spoonbills, avocets, stilts, and other birds typical of this region, where camping by the sea lets you soak up the sea air and enjoy the peace and quiet!

In Arles, you’ll be captivated by all the ancient ruins, while Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a pilgrimage site, will charm you with its church built to withstand pirates, its well-preserved traditions, and the herdsmen’s huts. The Camargue is thus a prime destination for combining culture and exploration—not to mention the joys of swimming in the Mediterranean!

Tourism in Arles is built on a remarkable ancient heritage, featuring the amphitheater, the Gallo-Roman theater, and the banks of the Rhône. Just a few kilometers away, the Camargue is home to a preserved natural environment, featuring ponds, rice paddies, and protected areas. This proximity allows you to easily alternate between cultural visits, city sightseeing, outdoor activities, and nature exploration. History buffs will be happy to extend their stay to Avignon and its rich heritage, or to Orange and Vaison-la-Romaine for a different perspective on ancient Provence.

Salt marshes, pink flamingos, and a well-deserved swim

The Camargue is famous for its salt marshes, which are particularly visible around Salin-de-Giraud. This unique landscape, shaped by water and wind, offers a complete change of scenery. The ponds are home to colonies of flamingos year-round, which can be observed from marked trails and observation decks. The beaches at Piémanson, Beauduc, and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer invite you to end your day with a swim. For other spectacular natural landscapes in the region, Marseille and the Calanques are also worth a visit.

Things to See and Do in Arles and the Camargue

Every summer, Arles hosts the Rencontres de la Photographie, from July through September, at several of the city’s iconic venues. Also in July, the Festival des Suds in Arles features concerts and performances in the historic center. A must-see, the Feria d’Arles, held in the spring and fall, brings the arena and surrounding neighborhoods to life. In the Camargue, you can attend the Camargue and Rhône Delta Festival in May in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, or the Grand Raid de Camargue, which takes place in the fall. To round out your Provençal cultural itinerary, the charms of Mediterranean Provence await you just a short drive away.
